Solutions
Methane (CH4) is a dangerous greenhouse gas. Reducing CH4 emissions is one of the most important actions we can take to address climate change. For mine operators, methane mitigation can create an additional source of revenue while increasing social license to operate. For coal communities, methane mitigation improves air quality and can create new jobs. Electricity from coal mine methane can also provide grid operators with 24/7 clean energy.

Methane Capture
Preventing methane from reaching the atmosphere is the core of work. Once we capture methane, next steps may include destruction via oxidation, electricity generation, or cleaning up the methane and putting it in a pipeline for use as natural gas.
-
Electricity Generation
The energy in methane can be converted to electricity with the use of generators. Depending on the size of the mine and level of emissions, electricity generation can be substantial enough to power a small town, often using transmission infrastructure already in place.
-
Certified Carbon Offsets
Coal mine methane mitigation is a recognized practice in emissions-trading markets. The majority of offsets we create are certified and sold on the California Air Resources Board cap and trade system. MethaneRx helps organizations purchase offsets or establish projects to create offsets.

Remediation Advisory
MethaneRx advises private companies, governments, nonprofits and land owners on the practical solutions and issues surrounding methane capture. We survey sites for the presence and volume of methane and assess the economic potential of methane capture and utilization for your location.
